Steve Jobs Unveils the Ipad 2 – Should You Wait for the Ipad 3?
Steve Jobs came back from leave to launch the iPad 2, but is this just a temporary update until they sort out the iPad 3?
Well we came pretty close in our predictions for the iPad 2 here, the only thing missing was an improved display.
This has made us think that the iPad 2 is just a refresh in order to keep competitors at bay until the real meaty upgrade happens for the iPad 3.
With Google launching their Android honeycomb operating system and manufacturers such as Motorola with their Xoom taking advantage of that Apple needed to do something to steal back the headlines, and offer something more in touch for consumers. The iPad 2 was the result.
What’s New for the iPad 2?
There are a few new features and enhancements to talk about and here they are:
- Front (VGA) and rear (720p HD) facing cameras
- HDMI out (via adaptor)
- 10 hour battery life (same as iPad 1 but has to power more hardware)
- 601g weight
- 8.8mm thick
- Gyroscope
- Svelte iPad cover (optional extra)
- New A5 dual-core processor
So as you can see the ‘refresh’ is nothing to be sneezed at, don’t underestimate these improvements. In practical terms, apps that struggled a bit on the iPad 1 now zip along, especially noticeable in games with heavy graphics.
The redesign of the case is a great success, it sits on a flat surface better and is more comfortable to hold in your hand after a long period of use.
Conclusion
Would we recommend the new iPad 2? Most definitely, it is a great machine that just got better.
Would we recommend upgrading from an iPad 1 to iPad 2? A much trickier question to answer, it depends entirely on what you do. Personally I would say that if you can get an upgrade for a cheap price (i.e. you can get good resale price for your iPad 1) it is worth considering.
I for one, an going to wait to see what the iPad 3 brings in about 8-12 months time before I get my wallet out… possibly after the new iPhone 5 is launched sometime in late 2011.
