F1 Driver, Robert Kubica Regains Consciousness After 7 Hour Surgery

The Renault Formula 1 driver, Robert Kubica, has regained conciousness after undergoing marathon surgery following a severe crash on Sunday at an Italian rally event.

The 26 year old suffered fractures to his arm and leg after crashing into the wall of a church, his right hand was partially severed and it reportedly took more than an hour while rescuers tried to cut him free.

His co-driver, Jakub Gerber, escaped from the wreckage unharmed.

It is feared that Kubica’s future in F1 is now in jeopardy because of his injuries, last season he finished 8th in the F1 drivers table and is considered a talented driver on the F1 circuit.

Renault will draft in a replacement for Kubica as the 2011 formula one season is about to kick off on March 13th. The reserve drivers are Bruno Senna and Romain Grosjean, one of them is likely to be the short term replacement but if it looks like Kubica will be out for any length of time other options are likely to be considered.
