Usain Bolt Disqualified in 100m Final at World Championships
Usain Bolt has been disqualified from the 100m final at the World Championships for bolting before the gun.
The Jamaican Usain Bolt had been favourite to pick up a sixth gold medal in the world athletics championships 100m final. He still has the 200m and 100m relay to come.
The stadium in Daegu, Korea, didn’t quite know what to make of it as Usain Bolt fell foul of an update by the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) to the false start rule.
Previously, athletes were allowed to make 1 false start, coming out of the blocks prior to the start gun firing, but since last season that has changed.
Now one false start and you are out. Britain’s best sprinter, Dwain Chambers also came a cropper to the rule in the semi-finals.
To many, the new rule is too harsh on a sport where reaction times off the starting blocks are critical to winning a race.
With Usain Bolt out, the way was clear for his fellow Jamaican and training partner Yohan Blake, to step up and take the title in 9.92 seconds. He finished ahead of the American Walter Dix in 10.08 and Kim Collins in 10.09 seconds.
However, the major talking point was always going to be the disqualification of Usain Bolt.
Usain Bolt: The Fastest Man in History
Usain Bolt achieved legendary status in a matter of only a few days. He seemed to come out of nowhere in 2008 to become the best in sprinting history.
In was the year of the Baijing Olympics and Usain Bolt took the 100m record… ate it, chewed it up, spat it out and stamped on it. He then did the same with the 200m.
Usain Bolt ran the 100m in 9.69 seconds and was so far ahead, he took to jogging the last 5 metres. This was perhaps confirmed when Usain Bolt ran 9.58 seconds a year later in Germany.
