Women’s World Cup 2011: Sweden Beat France to Claim 3rd Place

Sweden have beaten France to claim 3rd place at the Women’s World Cup 2011 in Germany.

Marie Hammarstrom scored with 8 minutes left on the clock to clinch the runners up spot for Sweden. She had come on as a substitute just 20 minutes earlier as a replacement for Linda Forsberg.

It was a great goal to win the game with, she twisted right then left before unleashing a powerful left footed strike into the corner of the net.

Sweden took the lead within 1/2 hour with a ball over the top, latched onto by Lotta Schelin who then slipped the ball past the on rushing keeper.

It was the last we saw of the French keeper, Berangere Sapowicz, as she had to be stretchered off after injuring her ankle as she landed awkwardly.

The French also lost their playmaker Louisa Necib after she injured her knee going in for a tackle. They had to wait until the second half before their equaliser came, Elodie Thomis shooting the ball just inside the post.

The balance of power should have shifted towards France after Oqvist saw straight red for lashing a boot out at Sonia Bompastor after they both challenged for the ball.

But it was Sweden who would finish the strongest, it has been a pattern at this years Women’s World Cup for France to fail to finish games off strongly.

Against England in extra time, when some of the English players couldn’t even move they were unable to take advantage.

The women’s world cup 2011 final takes place tomorrow between Japan and the USA in what should be a great game. The Japanese are a technical side who like to pass the ball around but have never beaten the USA before.

The USA on the other hand have won the Women’s World Cup twice before and are going for their 3rd. They are fit and strong with a more direct approach.
