USA Through To The Women’s World Cup Final 2011

The USA have made it through to the Women’s World Cup Final 2011, beating France 3-1.

The USA are now chasing a record 3rd World Cup trophy after beating a talented French side with 2 goals in the closing stages of the game. The achievement of reaching the women’s world cup final 2011 was theirs to savour, if only for a short time. The final against Japan will take place on Sunday.

It was the USA that struck first in the damp conditions of Monchengladbach after just 9 minutes of play. A run by Heather O’Reilly down the left wing saw her cross get the slightest of touches from Lauren Cheney, directing the ball past the stranded keeper and into net.

France had opportunities of their own, including seeing a shot from distance ping off the crossbar. It wasn’t until the start of the second half that they got their reward when a cross from Bompastor snuck into the corner of the goal. Solo lost track of the ball in the confusion of the penalty box.

Towards the end of the match, the greater conditioning of the USA side began to tell as they cranked up the pressure. 11 minutes from time they won a corner.

Cheney floated the ball into the area and the imposing Abbey Wambach got up at the back post to head in from close range. 3 minutes later as France were made to press, a counter attack gave Morgan the chance to wrap things up and she slotted the ball home to give the USA the victory.

The USA last appeared in a Women’s World Cup Final in 1999 when they won on home soil. Can they win again? This time against a strong Japanese team who, lets not forget, beat a German team who hadn’t lost a World Cup game since 1999?
