The FIFA Women’s World Cup kicked off today in Germany with the hosts looking to add a record 3rd World Cup to their achievements.
Germany will kick off their tournament today with a match against Canada and no one would bet against them achieving an historic 3rd World Cup title.
Women’s football is gaining ground rapidly all around the world and over 700,000 tickets have been sold for the 3 week competition. The games are being broadcast live in Germany on the public channels and outdoor viewing areas have been setup to accommodate demand, many other competing nations are following suite.
One of Germany’s main rivals for the title are the United States, currently the no. 1 ranked team in the world. They have also won the World Cup twice and are the current Olympic Champions, although they have shown up and down form recently having lost to England, Sweden and Mexico in the past few months.
The current FIFA women’s player of the year is the Brazilian striker Marta, in fact, she has won that particular title for the last 5 years. She heads a young but strong Brazilian team that could and perhaps should be challenging for the top spot in 3 weeks time.
