Sebastian Vettel Wins Monaco F1 GP
Sebastian Vettel has won the Monaco F1 Grand Prix for the first time in his career, extending his lead in the drivers championship.
Red Bull pulled off another victory with their driver Sebastian Vettel coming home after an eventful Monaco Grand Prix.
The Ferrari of Fernando Alonso came in second with Jenson Button driving his McLaren arriving just behind in 3rd place.
The race was looking like it would go down to the wire as Vettel was forced to stay out with rapidly deteriorating tyres in order to keep his first place track position.
Alonso and Button, on fresher tires, were all over the back of his car although the Red Bull’s astonishing grip and speed out of the corners meant he was just keeping far enough ahead to prevent the passing opportunity.
However as all the engineers will point out, when these tyres go, they really go. The drivers call it ‘falling off the cliff’ and it becomes a real challenge just to keep the car on the track.
Just as the other teams were predicting that Vettel would fall off this cliff, he got a stroke of luck as an accident involving Petrov closed the track under a red flag. This meant that all the cars returned to the starting grid and could have tyres and other work done on the car, effectively giving Vettel the race.
There were concerns for Petrov as it looked like he was unconscious for a short time and came too complaining of pain in his legs. He was taken to hospital for scans but it is understood that there is nothing broken, just some bruising.
All in all another good day for the Red Bulls as Vettel stretches his lead again in the drivers championship, only 7 points off from achieving an astonishing maximum points from all the races so far this season.
