FIFA to Investigate Sepp Blatter, Bin Hammam and Jack Warner
After a building crescendo of corruption allegations, FIFA are finally investigating some members. Sepp Blatter, Bin Hammam and Jack Warner are all to appear before it’s ethics committee.
After the bitterness of this years World Cup bidding process, loyalties seem to be cast aside as more allegations against members of FIFA are surfacing.
Before the bidding process culminated in wins for Qatar and Russia, the BBC broadcast an investigation into corruption charges against some members, including Jack Warner. The BBC alleged illegal payments from sports organisations and the alleged black market selling of FIFA tickets.
The Sunday Times newspaper also carried out an undercover investigation alleging that votes could be bought.
England, who were bidding for the right to host the 2018 World Cup ended up with only 2 votes (one of which came from their own member) even though they were thought to have one of the strongest bids.
One of the men at the heart of that bid Lord Triesman, told an official investigation into why Englands bid failed, that there were 4 members who he alleged had implied that they wanted something in return for their support.
Bin Hammam and Jack Warner will go before the committee to face allegations by fellow member Chuck Blazer that they offered bribes at a meeting of the Caribbean Football Union in Trinidad.
Bin Hammam for his part has stated that it is a conspiracy against his run for the FIFA presidency job. He claims that it is true that he paid for the delegates expenses, travel and accommodation but that no bribery took place.
Sepp Blatter has been drawn into the event by Bin Hammam who alleges that he knew what was going on but did nothing.
The two men are competing for the FIFA presidency is due to be decided next week. The English FA have already declined to take part in the vote, if FIFA don’t postpone the vote themselves then other football associations may do the same.
