Will Burma Finally Release Opposition Leader?

Is pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi about to be released?

Rumours are spreading that Burma’s military rulers are on the verge of releasing the opposition leader from house arrest where she has been for most of the past 2 decades.

The current ruling party has just claimed the majority of seats in both houses of parliament after the first election in 20 years. Western leaders and human rights activists say that it was a rigged election aimed at securing the government while giving it a respectable face.

Aung San Suu kyi’s party won a landslide victory at the last election held in 1990 but the military rulers refused to give up power.
