The End is Nigh For Egyptian President Mubarak

In a speech tonight the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak explained how he will not stand for re-election in September, but will remain in charge until then.

The reaction of the Egyptian crowd, who watched live after a week of protests in the major cities, can be summed up as dis-belief.

It remains to be seen whether Mubarak’s concession will placate the demonstrators who have been demanding that he step down immediately.  They want change in their country and most people appeared to be of the view that they will not leave until he resigns with immediate effect.

Most are not currently concerned with who will follow in his footsteps, they just want to see an end to the 30 years of harsh rule that they see as repressive and that has succeeded only in taking Egypt backwards.

It is a sign of the times that it is now the Mubarak supporters who are hiding, daring not to speak out in support of their President. How things change quickly, if you were caught speaking out against the President not too long ago, there could be serious consequences.

Whether Mubarak leaves office immediately or in September, one thing is for sure; he has lost all credibility in his own country and among other leaders around the world, including other Arab countries. His career looks to be well and truly over.
