Ratko Mladic Arrested in Serbia
Ratko Mladic is arrested in Serbia on war crime charges after 16 years on the run.
After spending 16 years on the run, Ratko Mladic was finally tracked down and arrested in the province of Vojvodina, Northern Serbia. He was living under an assumed name but seemingly without any other attempted disguise.
He has been arrested on war crimes charges, the most likely of which to be pursued is the charge of massacring around 8000 Bosnian Muslim males in the infamous town of Srebrenica in 1995.
Serbia was under enormous pressure to bring the ex-General to justice, especially when footage and reports kept popping up showing that he was living a free and enjoyable life, despite a high price on his head. His continued freedom was a major stumbling block in Serbia’s attempt to join the European Union.
He will now be transferred to the Hague to face trial although there are attempts to fight the extradition on health grounds. His son has said that he has suffered 2 strokes.
They are unlikely to get their way however and many people in Serbia now feel a page in history is now turning over and they can, at last, move on.
