Golden Globes Kick Off Award Season
The Golden Globes kick off the Hollywood award season tonight with their 68th award dinner.
The Golden Globes are the first major film awards of the year and is run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
This year they are presented by comedian Ricky Gervais, who doesn’t usually pull his punches. He sees it as his job to have a go at any big hollywood egos, it could be an entertaining show. He said that when he hosted it last time, he didn’t think that he went far enough. He added
“So I’m going to do it again, do a proper job, and I guarantee they will not invite me back.”
Leading this years nominations is the critically acclaimed ‘The Kings Speech’ starring Colin Firth, it has 7 nominations. ‘The Social Network’ and ‘The Fighter’ are close behind with 6 nominations.
‘Glee’ leads the nominations from TV with 5 nominations and Natalie Portman is heavily tipped for the best actress award for the film ‘Black Swan’. Colin Firth is the strong contender for best actor in ‘The Kings Speech’.
Traditionally the Globes are seen as the indicator for who will triumph at the Oscars but last year Avatar was the big winner at the Globes but failed to win best picture at the Oscars later in the year.
