Abbey Road, The Beatles & A Zebra Crossing
Have you heard the one about Abbey Road, The Beatles and the zebra crossing?
Today Abbey Road Studios announced that their application to have the Abbey Road zebra crossing in North London, marked as a listed monument by the Government has been successful.
In the UK a zebra crossing, so called because of it’s distinctive black and white markings, is a place where you can cross the road safely.
This particular crossing has been listed as part of Britain’s national heritage for one reason and one reason only.
41 years ago in 1969; it had 4 guys, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr & George Harrison, collectively known as The Beatles, photographed walking across it.
That picture became the cover of the last album The Beatles ever made together, the Abbey Road album (although that wasn’t the last to be released).
In truth the crossing is in a slightly different place than when the picture was taken after it was moved for traffic safety reasons. That doesn’t stop thousands of fans queuing up each year to recreate the famous zebra walk.
The listing means that the zebra crossing has to be preserved for the nation and should mean that fans will still be recreating that famous photo in 2110.
