Today is International Women’s Day

Today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day. A day that is celebrated around the world for all that women represent, a combination of valentines and mothers day.

It started out as a socialist political idea and really took traction in the eastern European countries such as Russia and the Ukraine, but has also spread to other countries around the world.

In some areas it still has political and social tones with the emphasis being placed on the struggles and injustices that women still have to face day to day.

In other areas it has more similarities to valentines day where men take the opportunity to celebrate the women in their lives by giving them small gifts.

In 2011 many events are scheduled around the world commemorating the 100th anniversary of the event. Google are highlighting the day with a Google Doodle and the Join Women on the Bridge campaign.
