Hollywood Screen Legend Elizabeth Taylor Passes Away
Elizabeth Taylor, the Hollywood screen legend has passed away in Los Angeles aged 79. She had a long history of illness and was in hospital being treated for symptoms of a heart complaint.
Born in London in 1932 she moved to America with her family in order to escape World War II and was spotted by talent scouts at an early age becoming a child star.
She starred in many films in her career but was most famous for ‘National Velvet’, ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ and Cleopatra, where she met one of her 7 husbands, Richard Burton.
Elizabeth Taylor’s private life filled the papers just as much as her acting career but during the 1950′s and 60′s she was one of the biggest movie stars in the world.
She was nominated for an Oscar every year between 1958 and 1961, eventually winning 2 (1961 and 1967). In 1999 she was also made a Dame by the Queen of England.
Taylor had already had 4 husbands when she met Richard Burton on the set of one of the most expensive and famous films of the era, Cleopatra.
Their rapport was obvious on screen and their passionate relationship led to marriage in 1964. They sometimes had a strained relationship, divorcing in 1974 and then remarrying a year later, before parting once again in 1976. Taylor went on to have 2 further marriages.
Health problems blighted the later half of her life, but to many people she will be remembered as the person who campaigned to raise awareness of the plight of Aids victims when no one else would. She started the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation and raised millions of dollar to help fund Aids research.
