Dominique Strauss-Kahn Granted Bail in New York

The ex-IMF head, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, has been granted bail by a New York judge after agreeing to stringent conditions.

A judge in New York has agreed to let DSK post bail at $1 million after he agreed to be confined in a New York apartment under armed guard to be paid for by him.

He will also have to take out a $5 million insurance bond and wear a tagging collar. All this is to ensure that he doesn’t try to abscond from US custody.

His defence lawyers had argued that their client was honourable and that he would not try to abscond, the prosecution had argued that he had the ability to live well in parts of the world beyond the reach of the US law and so should be denied bail. It is thought that DSK has assets of around a few million dollars, certainly his prior job as head of the IMF came with a large salary.

Up until now he has been kept in custody at the Rikers prison and is now due to be appearing in court to answer allegations of attempted rape on 6th June.
